Swedish Massage is the most well-known and commonly taught form of massage therapy. This type of massage is a vigorous treatment system which was designed to energize the body by stimulating circulation. This technique includes five basic strokes that all flow toward the heart and the intention of these strokes is to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. The client is allowed to disrobe in private and is always covered by a sheet. Only the area currently being massaged is exposed.
Swedish massage therapists use a combination of rolling, kneading, percussive, vibrational and tapping movements.
The use of oil provides a reduction in the friction on the skin providing a very gentle and relaxing experience. The oil also enhances the use of long smooth strokes, kneading and circular movements applied to the superficial layers of muscle.
Massage therapy not only relieves stress, it has also been found to result in accelerated healing and a reduction in swelling from injury.
